Aiken Singers is a non-auditioned community adult choir, based in Aiken, South Carolina. We provide an opportunity for enthusiastic amateur singers in Aiken County and surrounding areas to come together and ‘share the joy of singing’, both with each other and with the local community. Our primary mission is to take our music into retirement communities and nursing homes to bring joyful musical experiences to our local seniors, and we perform at least 4 such outreach performances per season. We also present two major public performances per year, in the Holiday (Winter) season and in Spring.
Our founding director, Diane Haslam, chose a broad range of songs of all styles, but mostly from the lighter side of music, with golden oldies and familiar popular songs alongside some jazz standards, gospel favorites, patriotic numbers, and musical theater pieces. Her classical music background meant she occasionally pulled out an opera chorus or interesting new piece, which just kept everyone on their toes and added to the growth of the group.
Diane felt the community choir represents all that is best about singing. “Singing in a choir is not only good for us physically and emotionally, but also for the community, bringing people together. And it’s a chance to have a lot of fun while learning beautiful music!”
Unfortunately, Diane returned to her English homeland in October, 2020. We will truly miss her. But we must move forward and so, following a search of suitable candidates during the summer of 2021, we announced that Josh Edwards would become our new Artistic Director.
